11 Night Cruise sailing from Athens roundtrip onboard Azamara Pursuit.
Depart from Athens, Europe’s oldest city, before awakening at the sun-drenched island of Santorini, where volcanic beaches, white-washed villages, and vibrant tavernas await.
The next day, arrive in Amorgos where you can explore its whitewashed villages and beachside tavernas. When in Rhodes, walk the cobblestoned Street of the Knights while taking in its charming sandstone buildings.
Your journey then brings you to Marmaris, where history buffs can make their way through the Marmaris Castle & Museum, the very castle that Suley the Magnificent hosted his troops in 1522.In the ancient Turkish port of Ephesus, discover the beautiful Library of Celsus, the Odeon, and the Amphitheater where St. Paul preached, as well as the House of the Virgin Mary.
Arrive in Kepez, the gateway to Canakkale, Troy, and Gallipoli. Then, it’s on to an overnight and late-night stay in the captivating city of Istanbul. Explore famed sites like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and Basilica Cistern. Shop at the Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. Go on a boat tour of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn and indulge in delectable Turkish cuisine.
Relax and recharge during a day at sea before arriving in Mykonos. Here you’ll spend the day exploring charming shops, bars, and restaurants tucked next to sun-bleached houses with vibrant blue shutters and white washed churches before returning to the city of Athens for the end of your voyage.
Highlights of this cruise:
Piraeus (Athens), Greece
You could spend a lifetime in Europe’s oldest city and still not see everything it has to offer. Settled over 3,500 years ago, Athens is like a mythological crossroads of the past and present, where modern buildings share the skyline with spectacular ruins like the Parthenon.
Santorini, Greece
The capital, Fira, clings to the rim of the caldera 900 feet above the sea. Take the cable car, or giddy up on a donkey to climb the 588 steps to the top. Hike to nearby Oia, a quintessential Greek village. Head south to the 3,500-year-old Minoan town Akrotiri. Often called Greece’s answer to Pompeii, the well-preserved ruins provide a glimpse into Santorini’s storied (and explosive) past.
Rhodes
First on your agenda should be the Rhodes waterfront where once stood the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Just a short ride away, the medieval town of Lindos features houses stacked like giant sugar cubes on a steep hill. Hitch a donkey ride to the acropolis at the top for spectacular views of the town and Saint Paul’s Bay.
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey
Kusadasi has many charms, but let’s talk Turkey: The star attraction is Ephesus. Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, its marble-made Arcadian Street stretches from the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre (where St. Paul used to preach) to the harbor. Nearby sites include the Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John, and House of Virgin Mary, where Mary is supposed to have spent her last days.
Kepez (Troy/Gallipoli), Turkey
Kepez is a small seaside town, but real treasures can be found when you explore further beyond the shore. The ancient city of Troy was once just a myth, but archaeological excavations have brought this fabled locale to life. Also within reach of port is the Gallipoli Peninsula, where an ill-fated WWI campaign devastated Allied forces. In Assos, the Temple of Athena sits perched on an acropolis with sweeping sea views.
Istanbul, Turkey
East meets West in the storied city where Europe and Asia meet. Start in Sultanahmet Square and you can easily explore the intricate architecture of Topkapi Palace, the cathedral-turned-mosque-turned-museum of Hagia Sofia, and the brilliant blues of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Sample kebaps, mezes and more at the city’s endless restaurants and taverns where you’re sure to meet friendly locals and be caught up in their infectious love of life.
Mykonos
Picture perfect is the best way to describe Mykonos. Idyllic in every way, from the brilliant blue water in its harbor to the rows of 16th-century Venetian windmills, Mykonos is a postcard come to life! Spend your days strolling delightful cobblestone streets and visiting artisan craft shops. And when the sun goes down, discover why locals refer to this hedonistic city as the Ibiza of Greece! |
