Highlights of this cruise:
Tokyo, Japan
Embark today in Yokohama and settle in for a fascinating journey that bridges the cultures of Asia and North America. Settle in to your veranda stateroom and explore your ship, perhaps browsing our onboard art collection. Later, head for dinner in our elegant main dining room, The Restaurant.
Osaka, Japan
Home to two of Japan’s oldest shrines, Osaka is a pilgrimage site for many devout followers of Shinto. Make a visit to Osaka Castle. Originally built in the 16th century and rebuilt twice since, it is a treasure trove of armory and artifacts. At Sumiyoshi Temple, admire the fine architecture that stretches back 17 centuries, a stark and elegant style with vivid red beams and columns. If you wish, you may journey to Kyoto, Japan’s former imperial city of stunning shrines, bamboo forests and the splendid Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion).
Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan, China
Visit the fascinating Taiwanese capital of Taipei on the island’s northern shore. This city boasts a curious blend of Chinese, Japanese and Western influences. Visit the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a monument dedicated to the founding father of Taiwan, and the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine to those who have fallen in China’s wars. You will stop for photos of Taipei 101, a stunning skyscraper that held the reign as “tallest†from 2004 to 2009.
Da Nang (Chan May), Vietnam
Explore Da Nang, a sleepy backwater transformed into a US base during the Vietnam War and today a bustling cultural center. Witness typical Vietnamese countryside here, blanketed with rice paddies and dotted with water buffalo. Admire the city’s colonial architecture, standing alongside ornate temples, and explore the fascinating Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture. You will also visit legendary China Beach, where US soldiers came for relaxation during the war. If you wish, explore the splendid architecture of Hoi An, spared from wartime bombing, or the treasures of Hue, once a dynastic capital.
Ho Chi Minh City
Call in Ho Chi Minh City today, formerly known as Saigon. Explore a heady mix of French and Vietnamese cultures here, where baguettes and croissants are sold alongside pho, Vietnam’s beloved noodle soup. Browse the enlightening exhibits at the National History Museum, where galleries chronicle the nation’s past. Or, view the Reunification Palace, the Central Post Office and Chinatown, and meet artisans at a lacquer workshop.
Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Thailand
Experience the cultural splendor of Old Siam, beautifully set on the Chao Phraya River. Take your time to enjoy the exquisite flavors of Thailand during a typical lunch. Then take in the other sights and sounds of one of Southeast Asia’s most colorful and cosmopolitan cities on a panoramic tour that includes a stop for an exterior view of the Wat Arun and Wat Benchamabophit temples. Admire the city’s many canals plied by traditional longboats and other small vessels. You will occasionally stop for photos as you enjoy the kaleidoscopic scenery.
