14 Night Cruise sailing from Athens roundtrip onboard Azamara Pursuit.
The Black Sea is more than just a body of water; it’s a keeper of secrets. Some say it’s the location of Noah’s Biblical flood; others suggest it’s the site of the lost city of Atlantis.
Our adventure begins in Athens, Europe’s oldest city and home to innumerable wonders. Then it’s off on a journey through time to the recovered Greco-Roman city of Ephesus.
From here, pamper yourself with a spa day aboard your boutique hotel at sea as we cruise the Bosphorus Strait, an ancient waterway that carries adventurers from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Upon arrival, we’ll visit cosmopolitan Varna, Bulgaria, foodie-friendly Constanţa, Romania, and decadent Odessa, Ukraine.
After another day cruising, we arrive in the seaside playground of Sochi, home of vibrant boardwalks and beautiful hiking trails. Then it’s off to the summer holiday paradise of Batumi, Georgia, followed by Sinop, Turkey—a fortified city full of history.
Next, an overnight stay in enigmatic Istanbul. This city that spans two continents is a true cultural crossroads, and the world’s largest bazaar is the perfect place to feel its thriving heartbeat. Finally, it’s back to Athens to discover more ancient attractions.
Highlights of this cruise:
Piraeus (Athens), Greece
You could spend a lifetime in Europe’s oldest city and still not see everything it has to offer. Settled over 3,500 years ago, Athens is like a mythological crossroads of the past and present, where modern buildings share the skyline with spectacular ruins like the Parthenon.
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey
Kusadasi has many charms, but let’s talk Turkey: The star attraction is Ephesus. Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, its marble-made Arcadian Street stretches from the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre (where St. Paul used to preach) to the harbor. Nearby sites include the Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John, and House of Virgin Mary, where Mary is supposed to have spent her last days.
Sinop, Turkey
A charming city perched on the Black Sea, Sinop boasts a colorful and tumultuous past that’s been carefully documented at the many excellent museums in the area. It’s also home to stunning views, lively open-air cafes and restaurants, a busy waterfront area, and fortification walls stretching up to 30 meters tall.
Istanbul, Turkey
East meets West in the storied city where Europe and Asia meet. Start in Sultanahmet Square and you can easily explore the intricate architecture of Topkapi Palace, the cathedral-turned-mosque-turned-museum of Hagia Sofia, and the brilliant blues of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Sample kebaps, mezes and more at the city’s endless restaurants and taverns where you’re sure to meet friendly locals and be caught up in their infectious love of life. |
