See the Duomo with Brunelleschi's dome, the famous baptistry, Michelangelo's magnificent David, the bridge over the Arno and the astonishing Uffizi Gallery. Beautiful Calvi on the island of Corsica is a beach town with a medieval past. Stroll through the village and enjoy a café meal adjacent to the distinctive Église Sainte-Marie, a historic pink church. Or traverse the cobblestones a bit further to see the stunning view from the citadel, a 15th-century fortress overlooking the bay. On the way, be sure to keep an eye out for a plaque indicating the home that is said to be Christopher Columbus’s birthplace.

Barcelona, Spain
Visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral and the amazing La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece. Olbia/Porto Cervo, Sardinia
Wander through the lovely town of Olbia and visit its 11th century cathedral with Roman artifacts and Punic burials. Or drive into the stunningly beautiful countryside of the Costa Smeralda with its towering cliffs, quiet grottoes and exquisite sandy beaches beside emerald green waters. Explore the enigmatic remnants of the ancient Nuraghic culture.

Amalfi/Positano, Italy
Visit enchanting Amalfi to admire the 12th century Capuchin monastery and see the beautiful 11th century cathedral and cloister. Then discover chic Positano with its relaxed, sophisticated air and white Moorish-style houses clinging to steep slopes around a sparkling bay filled with colorful fishing boats.

Taormina (Sicily), Italy

Zakynthos, Greece
The town of Zakynthos, on the Ionian island of the same name, curves around a scenic bay and melds into the surrounding fertile plains. While Zakynthos is modern, some of the architecture bears a Venetian influence, especially its fortress and historic Saint Mark's Square. Many of the icons and frescoes salvaged from the island's medieval churches are now exhibited in the Byzantine Museum. Be sure to leave time for the beaches and look for Caretta-caretta sea turtles, as Zakynthos is their primary nesting ground.

Tirana, Albania
Tour the National Museum of History with archaeological artifacts going back as far as 100,000 years or jump ahead a few millennia and relive the Byzantine era at the Fortress of Justinian. Examine everything from modern art to 800-year-old religious icons at the National Art Gallery or climb the city’s clock tower for fabulous views.
