10 Night Cruise sailing from Darwin to Broome aboard Kimberley Quest II.
The Kimberley Quest II is a 25 metre fully air conditioned expedition vessels equipped with helipads. The vessel has been custom built for the remote Kimberley region, enabling it to explore estuaries and river systems inaccessible to larger boats. The vessel has the luxury of all private en-suite cabins, several deck areas for relaxation, sightseeing and alfresco dining. The talented chefs offer a diverse range of cuisine, incorporating some of the best local produce.
Detailed Itinerary:
Day 1. Darwin
Arrive in Darwin and be transferred to your boutique ship, the elegant MS Caledonian Sky. This evening, get to know your Expedition Leader and Team at a welcome briefing before enjoying dinner on board.
Stay: Ten Nights: Aboard the exclusive MS Caledonian Sky
Day 2. Selaru Island
Sail to the Indonesian island of Selaru. This evening, enjoy the Captain’s Welcome Cocktails and dinner.
Day 3. At Sea
Get acquainted with the facilities of your beautiful ship, the MS Caledonian Sky with a day at sea. Perhaps enjoy the interesting and varied presentations from your Expedition Team about the places you will be exploring.
Day 4. Wyndham, Freedom of Choice
Today, choose between a scenic flight and land tour of the Bungle Bungle Range; a full day at El Questro Wilderness Park; tour Argyle Diamond Mine; or cruise the Ord River (some tours are capacity controlled)
Day 5. Koolama Bay, King George River and Falls
Wake up in Koolama Bay, named after a merchant ship bombed by the Japanese in World War II. Later, arrive at King George River, where you will board your Zodiac for a stunning cruise along the spectacular waterway. Accompanied by an Expedition Team Member, the highlight is sure to be King George Falls. This is the highest single drop falls in Western Australia, plunging approximately 80 metres over a magnificent sandstone cliff. During your amazing Zodiac Excursion, keep an eye out for the vast marine life that calls this place home.
Day 6. Vansittart Bay, Jar Island
With your Expedition Team, walk across salt flats to view the wreckage of a US Air Force DC3 which crash landed on the beach during World War II. Later, visit Jar Island and discover the island’s outstanding rock art gallery. See examples of the Kimberley’s mysterious Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) paintings, dating back some 20,000 years.
Day 7. Prince Frederick Harbour, Hunter River, Naturalist Island
Arrive at Prince Frederick Harbour, home to soaring red cliffs, green rainforest and mangroves. Explore the Hunter River and Naturalist Island. See Phillip Parker King’s ‘Nine Pin’ and catch a glimpse of the local salt water crocodile population along the Hunter River. Today you have the opportunity to take an optional helicopter excursion to see the mighty Mitchell Falls (own expense).
Day 8. Montgomery Reef, Doubtful Bay, Raft Point
Embark on an unforgettable adventure today as the magnificent Montgomery Reef ‘rises’ out of the ocean as the tidal waters cascade down into the surrounding channels. Board your Zodiac to experience this natural phenomenon up close and discover the reef’s diverse marine life, including turtles. Also keep an eye out for unique birdlife that can be seen feeding on the reef as the tide recedes. Afterwards, cruise through Doubtful Bay and travel ashore at Raft Point, where you will embark on a hike to discover one of the region’s most significant Wandjina art sites.
Day 9. Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls
Talbot Bay is known for its massive 12-metre tides that create an amazing spectacle, the unique Horizontal Falls. Subject to tidal conditions, you will embark on an exhilarating ride through the falls on a specially designed high-powered fast boat. David Attenborough described the phenomena as “one the greatest natural wonders of the world.†Keep your eyes open in the chance you may get to see some of the local Tawny Nurse Shark population lurking in the brilliant Turquoise Waters. Back on board this evening, enjoy a delicious dinner in either the restaurant or al fresco on the Lido Deck (subject to weather).
Day 10. Lacepede Islands
Today, visit the pristine Lacepede Islands, a series of low islands atop a platform reef. Discovered by Frenchman Nicolas Baudin in 1801, the islands were named in honour of French Naturalist Berard Germain. Board a Zodiac and keep an eye out for many species of birdlife including Australian Pelicans, frigatebirds, egrets, gulls and terns. The islands are also renowned as Australia’s most significant breeding grounds for the Green Turtle. This evening, reflect upon the days gone by and say goodbye to newfound friends as you enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Cocktails before dinner.
Day 11. Broome
After breakfast, disembark the ship and be transferred to either Broome Airport for your flight home, or to your Broome hotel. |
