11 Night Cruise sailing from Amsterdam to Lisbon onboard Azamara Journey.
Set out to sea from the Venice of the North—Amsterdam. Take in priceless works by Rembrandt and Van Gogh or cruise one of the city’s many canals before our evening departure.
Then it’s on to Rotterdam's many markets and top-quality restaurants before an overnight in Antwerp, a foodie paradise with the most Michelin starred restaurants of any city in Europe.
In Bruges, wander the maze of its medieval core, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Savor a dish of moules-frites, mussels in broth served with fries, the unofficial national dish.
When we dock in Honfleur, it’s like stepping into an impressionist painting. Find a seat under a pretty awning at a waterfront café and enjoy a mug of Normandy’s famous cider and a galette, a savory pancake. Both Honfleur and our next stop, Cherbourg, played vital roles in the D-Day landings and we stay late in both ports. Lucky for us, the region is also a haven for food and cheese lovers.
Another late stay at St. Peter Port, allows you lots of time to explore Europe’s prettiest harbor town. Stop at a local seafront pub, cocktail bar or café for a sundowner, glass of wine, or cappuccino.
Enjoy a day at sea before a culinary and cultural change of pace. Dine on fresh seafood and meander along Paseo Maritimo in spectacular La Coruña before falling in love with Porto, a centuries-old city known for its robust port wine trade, where your outstanding journey wraps up.
Highlights of this cruise:
Amsterdam, Netherlands
With more canals than Venice, Amsterdam is a winding wonder of waterways just waiting to be explored. Whether by boat or by foot, learn about the city's past inhabitants such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Anne Frank. You'll soon discover there's so much more to Amsterdam than windmills and wooden shoes.
Rotterdam, Netherlands
Travel to the “Gateway of Europe†to see where modern architecture meets rich maritime history. Savor multi-cultural cuisine at Rotterdam's many markets and Michelin-star quality restaurants. Behold classical works of art by Dutch masters and view modern works by world-famous artists like Dali, Picasso, and Warhol. From windmills to canals, discover a stunning contemporary city with an old soul.
Antwerp, Belgium
With the most Michelin starred restaurants of any city in Europe, Antwerp is a foodie's paradise. Once you'd have your fill of exceptional cuisine, set out to explore this sophisticated city that seamlessly blends contemporary art and culture with its storied Renaissance past.
Zeebrugge (Bruges), Belgium
In Bruges you can lose yourself in another time, wandering the maze of winding lanes or drifting along the canals of its medieval core, the whole of which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can also have a wonderful time discovering the fascinating stories behind the products for which Belgium is famous, in an unexpected array of museums.
Honfleur, France
Honfleur is a lively port and the maritime influence is evident. Even Sainte Catherine church has a ceiling resembling an overturned ship hull. The square surrounding the church gives way to cobbled lanes of half-timbered houses and elegant manors. The quality of light has long attracted artists—including Monet, Turner, Seurat—all of whom stayed at Saint Siméon, now Honfleur's most luxurious hotel.
Cherbourg (D-Day Landing Beaches), France
Occupied by the Germans in WWII, Cherbourg has long been a city of maritime significance. A tour up the coast takes you to the beaches of Normandy, steeped in military history. Stay in the city and explore La Cité de la Mer—a scientific and historic museum, and aquarium rolled into one. Don't miss a chance to see the imposing Mont Saint-Michel as it appears to rise from the ocean at low tide.
St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands
Experience the best of England and France in Guernsey. Take in postcard-worthy views of brightly colored houses, idyllic gardens, and cliffside paths from St. Peter Port. When the sightseeing is over, stop at one of the many bistros for an unforgettable meal. Then, spend some time shopping in the up-and-coming boutiques for the perfect souvenir.
La Coruna, Spain
La Coruna is a city shaped by the sea. You can see this influence in the Roman Tower of Hercules, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lighthouse marks one end of the spectacular Paseo MarÃtimo promenade, one of the longest in Europe. Take a stroll to see other waterfront highlights like the Marina, Castelo de San Antón, the Millennium monument, and the most popular beaches—Orzán and Riazor.
Leixões (Porto), Portugal
At the mouth of the Rio Douro lies the city of Porto, known mostly for its port wine trade. With origins dating back to the 5th century, there is plenty to see in this town. Stroll the Ribeira neighborhood along the river, explore the Cathedral area, or tour the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. Savoring a taste of tawny port, tripe, and seafood while here is highly recommended.
Lisbon
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. Its magnificent harbor made it a logical trading port as far back as the Phoenicians, as well as a departure point for 15th century voyages sponsored by Prince Henry the Navigator, patron of Portuguese explorers. The city is rich in architecture, from Romanesque and Gothic to Post Modern, and criss-crossed by monument-studded grand boulevards. Today it is seeking a place on the world stage by hosting, in addition to its own active cultural calendar, film festivals, art, fashion, and design shows, book fairs, marathons, and rock concerts. |
