10 Night Cruise sailing from Rome to Venice onboard Azamara Quest.
There’s no better place to begin your immersive Italian adventure than in Rome. Go a bit off the beaten path to the Testaccio neighborhood (a favorite among Rome’s foodies) and get swept away by the whimsical architecture of the “fantasy district†in Quartiere Coppedè. Savor some Italian comfort food in Sorrento and fuel up for a day of archaeological exploration in Pompeii.
We stay late in port here so you’ll be able to capture the true essence of la dolce vita. It’s all about the views in Amalfi, where rainbow-hued homes are stacked on the cliff side and winding roads lead you to Positano and Salerno. Next stop: Sicily, where Mount Etna looms large and the hilltop village of Taormina offers stunning views of the island from an ancient Greco-Roman amphitheater.
From here, pamper yourself with a spa date and a show aboard your boutique hotel at sea as we cruise the Mediterranean. Our next destination allows you to discover one of Italy’s best-kept secrets—the Puglia region. Tour the pink-washed Baroque towns, endless orchards and olive groves of Brindisi and Lecce for the quintessential Italian experience. We divert briefly from Italy to visit Kotor, Montenegro. Trust us, this medieval fortress city is well worth the detour.
We return to Italy to stop in the hillside, hidden gem of Ancona on the Adriatic before experiencing the mélange of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures in historic Trieste. Lastly, we end our voyage in Venice, where you can soak in every last ounce of timeless romance before you debark.
Highlights of this cruise:
Rome, Italy
Rome has something special to offer to all visitors, no matter their interests and tastes. Whether you daydream about fighting with gladiators in the Coliseum, debating with togaed senators in the Forum, tossing a coin in a fabled fountain, or being awestruck by the magnificence of St Peter's Basilica and Michelangelo's masterpieces, Rome seems to live up to its sobriquet - the Eternal City. When you need sustenance, today's Rome will provide delizioso pasta e vino. Or perhaps you draw strength from a little retail therapy - the Italians are also renowned for their sense of style.
Sorrento, Italy
With its many pedestrian-only streets, Sorrento is a lovely city to explore on foot, but there’s no way around it: If you really want to see Sorrento, you’re going to have travel vertically. Most of the town is set up on the cliffs, so to get to the top, you can hop on a mini-bus, take the lift, or go on a short but steep hike. Love to eat? You’ll find the dining experience here second-to-none, where lemon is the star. It’s in everything: risotto, olive oil, gelato, and, of course, limoncello. (There’s no chance you’ll be getting scurvy on this trip!) But if your mouth gets tired of puckering up, enjoy a dinner of Gnocchi alla Sorrentina—pillowy potato dumplings baked in a cheesy tomato sauce. Italian comfort food at its finest.
Amalfi, Italy
This locale requires a camera with lots of memory. Wedged into the mouth of a ravine, encircled by sheer cliffs and facing blue waters, it is hard to believe that this tranquil little town was once a great naval power. Now, terraced hillsides support lemon groves, where the region's famed limoncello is produced. Taste this delightfully sweet liqueur after a foray along the Amalfi Coast, a thrilling ride snaking along hillsides past unbelievably stunning views of other pastel hamlets perched above the sea.
Siracusa, Sicily, Italy
Classic sights like the Ortygia, Neapolis, and the Basilica of Santa Lucia are always worth a visit, but if you’re looking for something a little more offbeat, take in a puppet theatre show—a traditional form of Sicilian entertainment. The stunning Fonte Aretusa was once the source of the city’s drinking water, and now the pond and surrounding area is a scenic spot, perfect for a picnic lunch.
Brindisi (Lecce/Alberobello), Italy
Once used by Holy Roman Emperors as a base for their Crusades to the Holy Lands, Brindisi is a hidden gem in Italy's Puglia region. With sprawling orchards and olive groves, and pink-washed Baroque towns nearby, it's the quintessential Italian experience. One must-see for history buffs is the temple of St. Giovanna—rumored to be the home of the Knights Templar.
Kotor, Montenegro
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kotor is filled with churches, shops, bars, restaurants, and hidden piazzas. (The latter are perfect for enjoying Montenegrin wines like the red Vranac or dry white KrstaÄ.) The entire city is surrounded by stone, both in the form of imposing Mount Saint John and by towering ancient walls, creating a cozy feeling of protection when you walk the cobblestone streets.
Ancona, Italy
A beacon on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, Ancona is a city steeped in over 2,400 years of history. On Azamara’s cruises to Italy, walk beneath Ancona’s towering marble Arco di Traiano, tour the Ancona Cathedral—built high above Old Town atop an ancient Roman temple—and explore millenia of human history at Marche National Archaeological Museum.
Trieste, Italy
Nestled up against Slovenia and at the intersection of Latin, Slavic and Germanic cultures, Trieste’s historic grandeur still captivates, from the Roman amphitheater to the city core’s array of noble buildings.
Venice, Italy
Venice is one of the world's most beautiful cities, and arguably the most romantic. An independent city-state and major power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it was a center of commerce in silk, grain, and spices, and home to a wide range of interesting characters from Marco Polo to Casanova. Consisting of more than 100 small islands connected by arched bridges, its thoroughfares are canals, and transportation options are limited to boats and your own two feet. After the requisite gondola ride, do stroll the winding traffic-free streets along the canal sides - prime real estate for the palaces of the aristocracy of old. |
