Athens/Piraeus, Greece
Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and has been a gateway to the Mediterranean since 482 BC. It lies on the innermost point of the Saronic Gulf and is a short drive from Athens, the cradle of Western democracy and culture. Throughout the ages, Athens’ lofty Acropolis has been a source of inspiration. The ancient ruins scattered throughout this legendary city are reminders of Greece’s great cultural heritage.
Santorini/ThÃra, Greece
Of all the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is often considered the most dramatic. Once an active volcano, it was known as Stongyle, or the Round Island. In about 1500 BC, the volcano erupted with such force that the center of the island literally exploded, leaving the haunting submerged crater into which Crystal sails. The island’s small villages were preserved in the ashes and recent excavations have uncovered a fascinating view of everyday life from 3,500 years ago.
Santorini’s dark landscape offsets its simple, yet refined Cycladic buildings, which glimmer in the sunlight. The rich volcanic soil is ideal for grapes and the local vines produce a cherished crop known for its “special volcanic taste.”
ThÃra, or Fira Town, is laid out along the edge of a cliff that partially forms the rim of the now extinct caldera. A picturesque site, it exudes charm and an atmosphere of leisure that can be attributed to the easy-going Greek lifestyle.
Souda Bay/Chania, Greece
Located on the western side of picturesque Crete, just a short direct ferry ride from Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Souda Bay has always been a happening hub. The large natural harbor on its Mediterranean Sea southern coast has seen military operations, commercial trade and millions of curious footsteps of travelers on holiday. Souda is more than just a breathtaking setting for ancient wonders (though it has its share). Surrounding the bay’s harbor are ruins, monuments and vestiges of various points in history that tell the complete story of the island of Crete – from the archaeological site of Aptera to the era of Venetian rule, and 19th-century fortresses built by Turks to the final resting place of World War II Allied soldiers.
Valletta, Malta
The island nation of Malta is a treasure trove of cultures. Valletta, its fortified main city, rises dramatically from the water. This “City of Knights,” a monument to the past, was founded in 1566 by the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John. Sights not to be missed include the Magisterial Palace and St. John’s Cathedral, which is lavishly decorated with the coats of arms and banners of the crusading knights. Beyond Valletta, the countryside, although austere and rocky, has a special charm. Malta provides an enduring fascination for all visitors.
Siracusa, Italy
Siracusa, also spelled Syracuse, is a dynamic, beautiful, historic city—with considerable emphasis on historic. Its tight, winding alleys, gracious piazzas and glorious architecture represent a timeline of several millennia, with the accompanying swings in political power and artistic output. Syracuse was founded in 734 BC by the Greeks, and its star was soon on the rise. The city was a major influencer in the spread of Judaism and Christianity; the birthplace of celebrated mathematician and engineer Archimedes; admired by the likes of Plato; and became a rival to the very origin and apex of early Western civilization itself, Athens. Brimming with world-class examples of Greek, Roman and Baroque architecture and awash with Italian character, the entire city of Syracuse is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of its wonders can be found in its treasure-packed Parco Archeologico (Archaeological Zone), located on the mainland, and on the island of Ortygia, the old quarter of Syracuse connected to the mainland by two bridges. Amid a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets, you will find an atmosphere similar to Rome, only on a smaller scale. The Duomo, situated on a plaza reminiscent of Rome’s Piazza Navona, is breathtaking and one of the oldest churches in Europe.
Amalfi, Italy
Rocky peaks skirted by verdant shrubbery. Colorful buildings clinging to the hillsides. A small harbor dotted by vessels of assorted sizes and lineage. A promenade snaking its way along glistening waters. If this is how you picture an Italian seaside town, then you will be thrilled to reach Amalfi, an idyllic vision turned reality. The enchantment doesn’t end with dramatic coastal scenery. A range of cultural quirks further piques the senses, particularly the area’s famed lemons, grown in terraced gardens, appearing as a motif on ceramics and put to delectable good use in limoncello liqueur. Also of note is the thick, handmade paper called “bambagina,— crafted in the region for generations and still a connoisseur’s choice for wedding invitations and letter writing. You may use a sheet or two to pen a few lines about Amalfi, carefully choosing your words to describe a true gem of the UNESCO-designated Amalfi Coast.
Rome/Civitavecchia, Italy
Civitavecchia was founded by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. Today this port is noted for its fine seafood and attractive monuments. Located 90 minutes away is the Eternal City of Rome. Steeped in 2,500 years of history, Rome was for many centuries the center of Western civilization. It was both the focal point of the Roman Empire and of Christendom. Landmarks such as the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Spanish Steps are reminders of the legacy of its rich past.
