India contains a bewildering variety of tribes, religions, cultures and languages-and most are present in Mumbai, one of the world’s most densely populated cities. Remnants of British rule along oceanfront Marine Drive stand alongside the thought-provoking former home of Mahatma Gandhi, and the cave temple at Elephanta with its second-century Hindu gods.
Petra (Aqaba), Jordan
Situated at the top of its namesake gulf, Aqaba brings a refreshing release from the rose-colored desert to the north. Its sandy beaches and coral reefs are the most pristine on the Red Sea, and Jordanians hope to preserve them through careful planning. Beyond the modernity of Aqaba itself, the UNESCO treasure of Petra – an ancient rock-carved Nabataean city once lost to the Western world – and the wonders of the Wadi Rum await discovery.
Cairo (Sokhna), Egypt
This is where Cairo goes on vacation, a resort town on the Gulf of Suez shores. Wind patterns make this an ideal site for kitesurfing, and the uprising of world-class resorts have brought many modern conveniences to visitors’ fingertips. A call here serves as gateway to the Pyramids of Giza and soon, the new Grand Egyptian Museum, now slated to open in 2020 as the world’s largest archaeological museum.
Paphos, Cyprus
Paphos offers an abundance of architectural wonders – in fact, the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Don’t miss the spectacular House of Dionysus mosaics, charming Omodos Village and the solid rock catacombs of the Tombs of the Kings. Paphos is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Her spirit lives on in the ancient ruins and temples, as well as the modern harbor, palm-lined waterfront and sun-splashed beaches where love is always in the air.
Rhodes, Greece
Rich with natural beauty and colorful history, Rhodes represents one of the most architecturally varied locations in Europe. Hellenistic, Byzantine, Medieval and Turkish influences intermingle with abundant sunshine and dry air to cast a magnificent light over the island that the ancients dedicated to Apollo, the God of Light. High on a cliff, the ruins of the Temple of Athena sit amidst the beautifully preserved Acropolis at Lindos.
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey
A lovely seaside resort town on the Aegean coast, Kusadaşi is famous for sparkling waters, sandy beaches and enticing shops filled with designer clothing and hand-woven carpets and leather goods. More than these modern trappings, it is the gateway to Ephesus – the UNESCO-listed, 4,000 year old city – as well as the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), Basilica of St. John, and House of the Virgin Mary.
Santorini, Greece
Of all the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is often considered the most dramatic with its dark landscape and iconic whitewashed buildings. The rich soil is ideal for grapes and local vines produce a cherished crop known for its special volcanic taste. Picturesque “ThÃra,” or Fira Town, laid out along the edge of a cliff at the rim of the now extinct caldera, exudes an easy charm.
Athens (Piraeus), Greece
Venture through Greece’s largest port city, Piraeus, as you make your way to the cradle of Western culture. Athens has long since been the location of myth and muse, and its ancient heritage is still an incredible source of inspiration.
Jerusalem/Tel Aviv (Ashdod), Israel
A tidy planned community built on golden dunes, Ashdod is southern Israel’s only Mediterranean harbor. Yet this new city has fabulously ancient roots: Ashdod is mentioned in the Old Testament, and archaeologists have found ruins almost 4,000 years old. This is the doorway to the historic treasures of Jerusalem, and the worldly pleasures of Tel Aviv.
Bethlehem/Galilee (Haifa), Isreal
Hebrew for “beautiful coast,†Haifa has been a mecca for the faithful of all kinds for millennia. Its slopes of Mount Carmel, UNESCO-listed Acre and glittering coastline are all impressive, and it is also an ideal starting point for explorations of Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee; Zippori, “City of Mosaicsâ€; and the lively cosmopolitan delights of Tel Aviv.
Aghios Nikolaos, Crete
Built on the ruins of an ancient city, this 3rd-century trading center is the gateway to the many small villages and farms of Crete. Lake Voulismeni in the center of town connects to the sea by a narrow canal, with a park, amphitheater and collection of cafés taking full advantage of the idyllic setting. It is said that this lake is where the goddess Athena slipped into its waters to bathe and wash her glossy tresses.
