Fremantle has welcomed seafarers from around the world for over 150 years. This distinguished port city lies at the mouth of the Swan River and is Western Australia’s leading harbor. During the America’s Cup Yacht Race of 1986/87, it underwent a dramatic facelift and was transformed into a restored and revitalized mecca of cafés, restaurants, bars and beautiful Federation-style buildings.
Just 12 miles north lies Perth, Fremantle’s sister city. This thriving capital billows with an infectious sense of energy and confidence. Its scenic riverside setting is enhanced by splendid parks, restaurants, beaches, galleries, museums and a wonderful Mediterranean-like climate.
Bunbury (Margaret River), Australia
Shaped ages ago by lava flows, the basalt-rock land of Bunbury now encompasses one of Western Australia’s liveliest and fastest growing commercial hubs. Perhaps it’s the peninsula’s natural setting surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Koombana Bay and Leschenault Inlet, or maybe it’s the city’s proximity to Perth and even closer proximity to Australia’s abundant wildlife. Whatever the reason, Bunbury’s popularity is rising, bringing a surge of energy and a renewed appreciation for its history. Victoria Street forms the heart of the CBD (Central Business District), attractive and enriching with its parks, galleries, museums and 19th-century buildings. Cappuccino Strip, as the name suggests, is where you will find a cluster of hip coffeehouses and eateries, many with outdoor seating. As you would expect from a town nicknamed “City of Three Waters,— aquatic activities abound, including fishing, snorkeling and diving, not to mention a chance to interact with dolphins at the Dolphin Discovery Centre.
Adelaide, Australia
The gracious city of Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. It lies on a narrow plain between the Mt. Lofty Ranges and the Gulf St. Vincent’s blue waters. Much of the city’s appeal can be attributed to the planning of Colonel Light, who, as Surveyor-General in 1834, showed excellent foresight in providing a profusion of gardens and open space. The city center is completely surrounded by playgrounds, sports fields and colorful flower beds. Laid out on either side of the Torrens River and set against the rolling hills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, the city is blessed with ample water to maintain its green belt of parks and gardens. Adelaide is affectionately known as the “City of Churches.” The combination of verdant parklands and stately buildings imbue this prosperous center with enduring grace and character.
Kangaroo Island, Australia
Just minutes from South Australia’s mainland, with an ambience that feels a million miles away, Kangaroo Island or “KI”, as the locals call it, is home to so many incredible wildlife and nature preserves that it has earned the nickname “where the wild things are†and is known as Australia’s third largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island. A veritable playground for all manner of recreation, the island is also revered for its exceptional produce and laid-back, rural lifestyle.
A question you might ask about this Australian outpost is: Are there really kangaroos on Kangaroo Island? The answer is an emphatic yes. Kangaroos are not only numerous but also tame, known to hop into campgrounds and other human-inhabited areas to satisfy their curiosity and snatch a snack. Other types of wildlife found on the island include the aptly named Little Penguins, small creatures standing only 13 inches tall, along with koalas, wallabies, platypus, pelicans and sea lions. Several national parks and reserves invite visitors to watch and even interact with animals ranging from cuddly to reptilian. Other diversions on KI (as the island is known) run from the gastronomic to the photogenic. You might make an afternoon of sampling wine, cheese and honey. Swim and snorkel in the waters of a beautiful bay. Investigate underground caverns. Or marvel at the breathtaking coastline and striking rock formations. One such formation, Remarkable Rocks, is indeed remarkable, a group of wind- and wave-shaped boulders perched atop a granite outcropping, appearing as if a sculptor placed them there for display. The rocks are a highlight of Flinders Chase National Park, which hosts another remarkable formation, the distinctive rock bridge called Admiral’s Arch.
Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria. It maintains an air of old-world grace and refined dignity with spacious tree-lined boulevards and expansive parks. Waitangi, Bay of Islands, New Zealand
Like a stop in Philadelphia or Colonial Williamsburg, a visit to Waitangi lets you trace the founding of a country. It was here that a treaty between the Maori and the British was formed, making New Zealand part of the British Empire. At the Waitangi National Reserve, one of the most important historic sites in New Zealand, visitors can see the Treaty House where the 1840 treaty was signed, and view a faithful replica of the original document. Other attractions of the Reserve include the ornate Maori meeting house and a massive war canoe. Of course, this being New Zealand, there are many natural attractions as well, including lush forest and spectacular coastline.
Auckland, New Zealand
