From the magnificent fjords of Norway to the awesome ice-filled bays of Antarctica, Hurtigruten is renowned for its comprehensive collection of voyages to remote, beautiful and dramatic coastlines from the far north to the distant south.

There is an air of history about the Norwegian coastal voyage run by Hurtigruten. It has always been a part of coastal life, has always arrived at the ports and has always been there to rely on for more than 119 years. The ships take children to their christenings, newly-weds on their honeymoons and carry milk and vegetables to remote island communities. Works by recognized artists have helped the new ships gain renown as floating galleries. The Norwegian Coastal Voyage is a unique combination of first-class passenger ship and working ship. It is the perfect alternative to the traditional cruise for the independent, seasoned traveler. Enjoy a panoramic view of ever-changing, breathtaking scenery from the comfort of a deck chair or a chair in the lounge.

There is always something happening… without much really happening at all. The ships travel at 16 knots, which means that you always have time to enjoy the journey, to make new friends and to relax and take in the wonders of this wonderful journey.

‘The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage’ is not just a phrase someone invented. They were just stating a fact.

In 2019, Hurtigruten added a brand new ship to its fleet: the MS Roald Amundsen. The state of the art vessel features new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology that will reduce fuel consumption and show the world that hybrid propulsion on large ships is possible.

MS Roald Amundsen is the first of two hybrid ships Hurtigruten will add to its fleet over the next few years, cutting emissions by sailing with electrical propulsion. Hybrid technology, combined with the advanced construction of the hull and effective use of electricity on board will reduce fuel consumption and CO2-emissions on the ships by 20 percent. The build of these two ships represents the largest single investment in the history of Hurtigruten.

The future of shipping will be silent and emission free. MS Roald Amundsen will lead the way towards an even more sustainable way of traveling. Sailing on electrical power is not only a great benefit for the environment, but it will also enhance the impact of experiencing nature for the guests. The ship will be specially constructed for voyages in polar waters and serve as a comfortable basecamp at sea – bringing adventurers from all over the world to the most spectacular destinations in the most sustainable way.

17 Night Cruise sailing from Punta Arenas to Valparaiso aboard Roald Amundsen. Hotel stay pre-cruise in Santiago.

This is an expedition where the elements rule, and the weather, wind and ice conditions determine our final schedule. Safety is paramount, and the captain decides the sailing itinerary during the voyage. This itinerary is just an indication of what you can experience, and why every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique.

Day 1 Santiago de Chile – Hotel
Summer in the Metropolis
The capital of Chile is exciting and diverse. There is a lot to discover, from Andean glaciers at the city limits, to a backdrop of tall mountains, to skyscrapers, quiet parks, colonial architecture, and bohemian quarters, to the fast-flowing Mapacho River. Your adventure starts with an overnight hotel stay here.

Day 2 Santiago de Chile / Punta Arenas
Embarking on the Expedition
You fly early in the morning to Punta Arenas, where our hybrid-powered expedition ship, MS Roald Amundsen, is docked, ready for your expedition cruise to Antarctica.

Day 3-4 At sea
The Drake Passage
We sail through scenic Beagle Channel and over the legendary Drake Passage. Onboard, the expedition team starts the lecture program, giving you information about Antarctica’s amazing animals, geology and history. Enjoy the fresh sea air and watch for wildlife from on deck.

Day 5-8 Antarctica
Home to 90 percent of the world´s ice, Antarctica never fails to amaze and astound. In winter, sea ice virtually doubles the size of the continent. In summer, it is a breeding ground for millions of penguins, whales and seals.

This is a continent dedicated to peace, science and tourism that has evolved through millenniums without human interference. Therefore, we adhere to very strict environmental guidelines and rules. We want to leave nothing but our footprints and take nothing but pictures!

Antarctica is a true wilderness, so local conditions will dictate our final itinerary. We will attempt landings at several sites in the South Shetlands and Antarctic Peninsula to show you the incredible diversity of landscapes and rich wildlife.

At every opportunity, our expert expedition team will take you out ice-cruising and on landings. There may also be chances to kayak among icebergs, hike in stunning surroundings and even camp on the most remote continent on Earth.

Day 9-10 At sea
Drake Passage and Cape Horn
MS Roald Amundsen takes us safely back across famous Drake Passage. We will continue our lecture series and recap our experiences of Antarctica in the Science Center. As we reach South America, we will attempt to land on historic Cape Horn before continuing towards the Chilean fjords.

Day 11: Chilean fjords
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
Deep fjords and tall mountains plunging into icy waters await us in magnificent surroundings. This wild and remote area seems almost untouched by humans, full of isolated islands and hidden bays that harbor rich wildlife.

Day 12-13 Puerto Natales – Overnight Stay – 2 full days
Torres del Paine National Park
Puerto Natales is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, famous for its rock formations. Explore the park on our optional excursion to discover stunning terrain. The region hosts a wide range of flora and fauna, including llamas, pumas and foxes, and many species of birds like the Andean condor.

Day 14 Puerto Ed̩n РHalf Day
Isolated Beauty
After a cruise through Patagonian waters, the village of Puerto Edén in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park will enchant you. It is known for its geographical isolation, situated at the end of a deep fjord and surrounded by mountains. Its population of 250 includes the 15 remaining members of the Kawéskar people.

Day 15 At sea
Waters of Patagonia
Our expedition cruise continues north through the fabled waters of Patagonia. As we sail through iconic Andean seascapes, enjoy the vistas of this magnificent natural expanse.

Day 16 Castro – Full Day
Cosmopolitan Castro
Set among windswept hills and lush vegetation, Castro is known for its colorful “palafitos,” wooden houses mounted on stilts along the water’s edge, and the UNESCO site, Iglesia San Francisco. Nearby wide beaches are home to many seabirds, penguins and sea lions.

Day 17-18 At sea
Sailing North
As we make our way along the Pacific coast to Valparaíso, we will recap the highlights of the expedition cruise and scan for wildlife.

Day 19 Valparaíso, Chile
The “Jewel of the Pacific”
Sadly, every expedition must come to an end. And this expedition ends in the colorful and poetic city of Valparaíso. Take some time to explore this scenic metropolis before your flight home.
