Departing from Barcelona, you’ll first arrive in Palma de Mallorca. Explore the world’s largest underground lake at the Drach Caves and put your game to the test surrounded by vineyards at the Son Gual Golf Course. Then we set sail for Valencia, home of impressive Gothic monuments and plazas, the Calatrava-designed City of Arts & Sciences, and a perfect paella.
In Cartagena, wander along the Calle Mayor for modern architecture and traditional tapas, and head to ConcepcioÌn Castle for stunning views of the city and harbor. Next, it’s on to Granada, where the Alhambra palace and fortress complex is an absolute must visit. A late-night stay in the city also gives you lots of time to sample your way through the many delicious (and complimentary) tapas that usually come with each drink you order. Visit the exceptional museums of Malaga—the Picasso is a standout—and eat, drink, and shop all through the historic city center.
With a two-night stay in Seville, you’ll have plenty of time to explore. Visit the world’s largest Gothic cathedral, the ornate Alcázar complex, and Maria Luisa Park—plus, dine at delicious tapas-and-wine bars and catch a flamenco performance. Barcelona, Spain
Dynamic Barcelona is all about architecture, from the magnificent medieval buildings of the Gothic Quarter to the Modernist movement typified by the work of Antoni Gaudi. Though his materials were stone and metal, his forms were organic, awash in curves, swirls, and colors. His masterpiece is the amazing Church of the Sagrada Familia, colossal and as yet unfinished, though construction began in 1882. A contemporary contribution to the scene is Ricardo Bofill’s post modernist National Theater of Catalonia, an imaginative combination of classical and modern design, with a greenhouse-like lobby.
Palma De Mallorca, Spain
A modern city with an ancient past, Palma’s rich history is yours to explore. Architecture admirers must visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, an iconic Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral that has stood for nearly 800 years. For nature lovers, don’t miss the Caves of Drach, where light and shadow dances across the rock formations, creating incomparable visuals you won’t see anywhere else.
Valencia, Spain
Marvel at the stunning mix of innovative architecture and gothic beauty when you visit Valencia. This Spanish city is home to many avant-garde buildings, including the breathtaking City of Arts and Sciences cultural complex. Elsewhere, palaces and mansions constructed in the 15th century dot the cityscape, while The Silk Exchange resembles a medieval fortress housing many mysterious carvings.
Cartagena, Spain
The seat of ancient Carthage, this Spanish port city is steeped in over 2,000 years of history. Start at the Naval Museum to learn more about the “City of Cultures”, then set out to explore everything from Roman ruins right up to modern creations inspired by Gaudi.
Motril (Granada), Spain
Renowned for its multicultural history, flamenco dancing and free tapas bars, Granada’s glory is embodied in the magnificent Alhambra, a compound of palaces and gardens that is a masterpiece of Moorish style.
Malaga, Spain
Málaga is like a beautiful work of art. And it’s no wonder considering, considering it was the birthplace of Picasso. You’ll find a museum commemorating his birth here, which is a must-visit destination for art fans. Elsewhere, be sure to spend some time in the city’s Alcazaba, a 11th-century citadel that is home to three palaces, beautiful gardens, and opulent fountains.
Seville Spain
Did you know? Seville is credited with the invention of tapas. Join in with the locals as they graze from bar to bar, making an entire meal out of the experience. The city also has a rich history evident in its landmarks. The Alcazar, the main palace, is exquisitely decorated in Moorish style, with themed gardens laid out in terraces. All in all an abundance of riches for all those who come to call.
Lisbon, Portugal
One of the oldest cities in the world, Lisbon is rich in architecture and criss-crossed by monument-studded grand boulevards. Must-sees include the church of Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora, which dates back to the 12th century; Musee Calouste Gulbenkian, one of Europe’s leading fine arts museums; and Torre de Belém, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous monuments in Portugal.
