9 Night Cruise sailing from Venice to Rome onboard Azamara Quest.

Experience the classic beauty of the Mediterranean on this exceptional voyage. Begin in Venice and spend the day exploring its romantic waterways and the lively Rialto Market before a sunset departure. A late stay in Koper, Slovenia means you’ll have plenty of time to explore. Cross the border into nearby Trieste, the coffee capital of Italy, for a cappuccino at Caffe San Marco, trek through the Skocjan Caves, or simply roam the streets of Koper’s Old Town.

Wake up to Opatija, Croatia, a pretty-as-a-picture seaside resort town. Perched on the sparkling Adriatic, swim in sheltered bays, stroll along any part of the 7.4-mile-(12-km)-long coastal promenade known as the Lungomare, or devour the renowned cuisine and excellent wines of the region at some of Croatia’s best restaurants. In Sibenik, take a short boat ride to explore the rugged seascape of Kornati National Park. Next, we sail Croatia’s Inside Passage. The big ships don’t go here, so enjoy unobstructed views of mountains, wooded islands, and rocky coasts before setting sail to beautiful Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is outstanding – the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your next stop is Kotor, where you can walk all the way up to St. John’s Fortress on the ancient stone walls to enjoy spectacular views. After a day of recharging on your boutique hotel at sea, your voyage continues in Taormina (Giardini Naxos), Sicily. Stroll the beaches, tour the ruins, and don’t miss Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Then, it’s off to Sorrento, a cliff-side city home to the archeological ruins of Pompeii and the perfect place to conclude our journey.

Highlights of this cruise:

Venice, Italy
It’s hard to not get swept up in the romance and beauty of Venice, so we say why fight it? Let yourself be taken in by the city’s many charms as you stroll along the cobblestone streets, overarching bridges, and world-famous canals. And then plan on doing a little more walking. Consisting of more than 100 islands, Venice is Europe’s largest urban car-free area. So the only means for getting around (on dry land, at least) are your own two feet—unless, of course, you travel by water taxi or gondola. And let’s face it: If you don’t go on a gondola ride when you’re in Venice, you’ll never hear the end of it back home!

Koper, Slovenia
Even with such sights as the historic Old Town, Preaetorian Palace, and the beautiful square of Titov Trg, Koper is also the gateway to an array of intercontinental adventures. Trek through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Skocjan Caves; tour the capital city of Ljubljana, truly one of Europe’s secret gems; or cross the border into the Italian coffee capital of Trieste for a cappuccino.

Opatija, Croatia
It has doubled for Nice, France, in movies and is the birthplace of Croatian coastal tourism. The charming seaside town of Opatija was once the place to be for the elegant, glamorous elite. One look at the pretty oceanside promenade, impressive monuments, well-manicured parks, famous fountains, grand spa hotels, and magnificent Belle Époque villas, and it’s easy to see why. Take a selfie with the Girl with a Seagull statue, climb to the top of lush Mount Učka and its landmark stone tower for a truly magnificent panoramic view, or simply soak up this beautiful coastal setting.

Sibenik, Croatia
A must see in the old part of Sibenik is the Cathedral Sveti Jakov, and if you love the great outdoors, then visit Krka National Park. One of the best ways to see Sibenik is to lose yourself in the side streets and alleys that lead to charming shops and squares. Be sure to take a break at one of the city’s many restaurants and enjoy a local red babić paired with some fresh Adriatic seafood.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
From the moment you step beyond the stonewalls that protects Dubrovnik, you’ll understand what makes it so special. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is adorned with charming squares and centuries-old red-roofed buildings. Walk the walls for a spectacular view of the city, and if anything looks familiar, it’s probably because Dubrovnik is the home of King’s Landing on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Kotor, Montengero
Don’t be surprised if you leave a piece of your heart in Kotor. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town is filled with churches, shops, bars, restaurants, and hidden piazzas. (The latter are perfect for enjoying a nice glass of Montenegrin wine like the subtle red Vranac or dry white Krstač.) The entire city is surrounded by stone, both in the form of imposing Mount Saint John and by towering ancient walls, creating a cozy feeling of protection when you walk the cobblestone streets.

Giardini Naxos (Taormina), Sicily, Italy
Many people only know of Sicily from The Godfather, but it’s an incredible island worth discovering. So if you get the chance to visit with Azamara, it’s an offer you really shouldn’t refuse. For a little rest and relaxation, Giardini Naxos is just the ticket. The coast seems to stretch on for miles, and there are many lidos dotting the beaches, where you can rent a chair and umbrella, and maybe even have a little afternoon riposo (the Italian version of a siesta). If it gets too hot, treat yourself to a delicious granita. To the left of Giardini Naxos looms Mount Etna, Italy’s largest active volcano. Hikes to the top of the mountain are only advised for experienced hikers (dress warmly!), but the Silvestri Craters are fun to explore at any skill level, and you can walk right down into the base of these inactive craters.

Sorrento, Italy
Looking out from Sorrento is the isle of Capri. The island is divided into two main parts, Capri and Anacapri. Capri is full of Italian luxury, with designer stores and five-star hotels lining the streets, while Anacapri is slightly more down-to-earth. Take a relaxing chair lift ride to the very top of the island, as the views are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Rome, (Civitavecchia) Italy
Rome has something special to offer to all visitors, no matter their interests and tastes. Whether you daydream about fighting with gladiators in the Coliseum, debating with togaed senators in the Forum, tossing a coin in a fabled fountain, or being awestruck by the magnificence of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s masterpieces, Rome seems to live up to its sobriquet as the Eternal City. When you need sustenance, today’s Rome will provide delizioso pasta e vino. Or perhaps you draw strength from a little retail therapy—the Italians are also renowned for their sense of style.
