16 Night Cruise sailing from Athens to Dubai aboard Azamara Journey.
From Europe’s oldest city, Athens, we set sail for Crete, stopping in Agios Nikolaos, a small charming fishing village with the glamor of a chic resort town.
Next, we make for the modern marvel of engineering, passage through the Suez Canal en route to the Middle East. In the port city of Safaga, an overnight stay gives you time to uncover the renowned healing properties of the Red Sea and the many temples and tombs along the mighty Nile—including Karnak, Luxor, and King Tut. In Aqaba, discover the ancient city of Petra or Wadi Rum, one of the most amazing desert landscapes in the world. Or, since we stay late, there’s time for both! Then, another late stay in Eilat to explore the stunning beaches, spectacular coral reefs, and excellent hiking of this popular resort area.
Spend five luxurious days at sea indulging in spa treatments and specialty dining before arriving in Salalah, where you’ll find a lush desert oasis and rare frankincense trees.
Then it’s back to sea for two days of poolside lounging, live entertainment, and evening stargazing as we sail into port in Dubai—a city unlike any other in the world—and the perfect place to end your journey or continue to explore: shop for all that glitters at Dubai Gold Souk, have tea at the luxurious Burj Al Arab hotel, or ride to the top of Burj Khalifa.

Athens
Athens has quite a reputation to live up to. Named for Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, the city is credited with being the cradle of European civilization and birthplace of democracy. Ruins and relics of its glory days are scattered throughout the modern city, popping up where you least expect them. Its crowning glory is the Acropolis, perched atop a hillside, and covered in carved and columned temples of varying degrees of antiquity. Not quite so old is the Plaka, an appealing neighborhood for a stroll down cobblestone streets, past old mansions and a plethora of outdoor tavernas ideal for watching the world go by, while munching tasty Greek snacks.
Aqaba
The warm, tranquil waters of the Red Sea are perfect for the growth of corals, and the masses of brilliantly colored fish that live amongst them, making Aqaba a prime attraction for snorkelers and divers. Inland is a vast desert of stark beauty that entranced Lawrence of Arabia when he headquartered in its empty canyons during WWI. Even more awe-inspiring is the ancient city of Petra, carved into dusky pink rock by the Nabateans more than 2000 years ago. Entering through a long narrow stone passage, you’ll come suddenly upon the massive façade of the Treasury and stop dead in your tracks, mouth agape. “Wow†doesn’t begin to cover it.
Salalah
As the capital of Oman’s Dhofar region, the subtropical city of Salalah is renowned for its khareef, the monsoon season from June to September that transforms this “Perfume Capital of Arabia†into an oasis. But this subtropical city has many other year-round natural sights to behold, including the waterfalls, lakes, mountains, and caves of Wadi Darbat, Mughsail Bay, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Oman. There are also many historic places, like the ancient ruins of Sumahram Old City and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Al Baleed Archaeological Park otherwise known as “The Land of Frankincense.†And if you’re looking for a little retail therapy, there’s plenty of shopping to be done, especially at Lulu Shopping Center and Haffa Souq, the largest and oldest souq in Salalah.
Dubai
Dubai can already be mistaken for a movie set featuring a futuristic metropolis, and there are big plans still in the works. In the middle of the desert where almost nothing existed 20 years ago, there are so many building projects that foreign construction crews vastly outnumber citizens. Everything is the biggest, tallest, and the first of its kind, including manmade islands shaped like palm trees and the world’s first underwater hotel. It’s a striking collection of styles, including modern interpretations of Islamic architecture. If the planet’s largest shopping mall doesn’t appeal, traditional souks do still exist, including a gold souk housing over 200 retail shops.
