Highlights of this cruise:

Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, Norway
Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway and its capital. The archipelago, formed several million years ago, has a unique environment with high, snowcovered mountains – 60% covered by glaciers – spectacular rock formations and low growing colourful flora. There are great many different species of animal life. Seals, walrus, polarbear and whales have their habitat all along the coast. Longyearbyen is the seat of local government and Norway’s main administrative centre on Svalbard. The small colourful community of approx. 1800 inhabitants has developed from being a typical mining community into a community with a number of businesses and industries and a wide range of cultural activities and opportunities. In general, the population of Longyearbyen is rather young, with many small children. Leisure and cultural activities abound. Since there are no roads between the settlement areas on Svalbard, snowmobiles and boats are a common means of transportation. Locals are very fond of outdoor activities, as well as taking weekend trips to cabins and huts. There are plenty of sports and cultural events in Longyearbyen.

Ny-Alesund, Norway
Ny-Ã…lesund is one of the four permanent settlements on Svalbard. It is located on the Brøgger-peninsula at Kongsfjorden. Like the rest of Svalbard, Ny-Ã…lesund is administered by Norway. Ny-Ã…lesund is one of the world’s northernmost settlements and is the world’s northernmost functional public settlement. All of the permanent population work for one of the research stations based here. In the summer the activity in Ny-Ã…lesund is greatly increased with up to 120 researchers, technicians, and field assistants. At present, Norway, The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, France, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and People’s Republic of China all maintain research stations at Ny-Ã…lesund, although not all are inhabited year-round.

Reykjavik, Iceland
Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, directly east of Greenland, Iceland is Europe’s westernmost country and the second largest island in the North-Atlantic ocean. Its capital, Reykjavik holds practically half of Iceland’s entire population, perhaps not surprising considering how little of the country is actually habitable. As such it is the country’s unrivalled cultural and economic centre surrounded by a vast wilderness of mountains and glaciers. The city’s highlights are mostly found in central Reykjavik: lining Old Town and Lake Tjornin are attractive tin houses, some of the more historical buildings, and many of its restaurants and nighttime hotspots. Its nightlife is legendary, with all-night street parties in summer and a huge club scene year-round. The nearby surrounding wilderness offers walking trails at Videy Island or the lava area at Heidmork, is definitely worth a visit. At “Smoky Bay” you can see geothermal steam rising from the ground. Harnessed to heat the city, these smoke signals can be seen along with any number of natural wonders, half an hour out of town.

Prins Christian Sound (Cruising-depending on ice)
Prins Christiansund Fjord lies at the southeastern corner of Greenland just to the north of Cape Farewell on the east coast.Visitors to this picturesque area will see spectacular glaciers, steep fjords, and plummeting waterfalls created by the incredible force of the Greenland ice cap.

Nuuk, Greenland
Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland. It is located at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. It is the least populated capital in the world, but a bustling city by Greenlandic standards. Attractions in the town include the Katuaq culture centre, the Cathedral, the National Museum and the Nuuk Art Museum. Whale watching is a popular activity in Nuuk. Sightings of humpback, minke and fin whales are guaranteed from May to November.

Disko Bay
Disko Island is a large island in Baffin Bay, off the west coast of Greenland. It is the second largest island of Greenland (after the main island of Greenland) and one of the 100 largest islands in the world. Mineral deposits, fossil finds and geological formations can be found in the area. One of the interesting geological features is the native iron found at the island. A 22t lump of a mixture of iron and iron carbide has been found. There are only few places on earth where native iron can be found which is not of meteoric origin. There are numerous hot springs on the island. The microscopic animal Limnognathia, the only known member of its phylum, was discovered in these springs.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland
Kangerlussuaq is a settlement in western Greenland located at the head of the fjord of the same name. It is Greenland’s main air transport hub and the site of Greenland’s largest commercial airport. Kangerlussuaq is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and wildlife. It is home to musk ox, reindeers, arctic foxes, falcons, eagles, ravens and some of the most power full northern lights during the winter. Kangerlussuaq has the easiest access to the inland ice of Greenland. You can easily get to the inland ice by car, bike, Icelandic horse or by foot. The distance from Kangerlussuaq to the inland ice is only 25 km.
