Highlights of this cruise:

Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway and its capital. The archipelago, formed several million years ago, has a unique environment with high, snowcovered mountains – 60% covered by glaciers – spectacular rock formations and low growing colourful flora. There are great many different species of animal life. Seals, walrus, polarbear and whales have their habitat all along the coast.

Longyearbyen is the seat of local government and Norway’s main administrative centre on Svalbard. The small colourful community of approx. 1800 inhabitants has developed from being a typical mining community into a community with a number of businesses and industries and a wide range of cultural activities and opportunities. In general, the population of Longyearbyen is rather young, with many small children.

Leisure and cultural activities abound. Since there are no roads between the settlement areas on Svalbard, snowmobiles and boats are a common means of ttransportation. Locals are very fond of outdoor activities, as well as taking weekend trips to cabins and huts.

There are plenty of sports and cultural events in Longyearbyen. A new sports hall with a swimming pool is a popular focal point for many of the sports activities. Lectures and talks on various topics are regularly organised, often at the university. Many famous musicians and artists visit Svalbard during the year and there are many exhibitions, concerts and other special events, particularly during the weekends.

Ny Alesund
Ny-Ã…lesund is one of the four permanent settlements on Svalbard. It is located on the Brøgger-peninsula at Kongsfjorden. Like the rest of Svalbard, Ny-Ã…lesund is administered by Norway. Ny-Ã…lesund is one of the world’s northernmost settlements and is the world’s northernmost functional public settlement.

All of the permanent population work for one of the research stations based here. In the summer the activity in Ny-Ã…lesund is greatly increased with up to 120 researchers, technicians, and field assistants. At present, Norway, The Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, France, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and People’s Republic of China all maintain research stations at Ny-Ã…lesund, although not all are inhabited year-round.

Ny-Ã…lesund is home to the new Arctic Marine Laboratory (the northernmost in the world), which was officially opened on 1 June 2005. With many open rooms and wet and dry lab spaces alike, the marine lab is particularly useful for countries which do not maintain permanent research stations in the area.

Tromso
Tromso is a city and municipality in Troms county, Norway. Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the small island of Tromsøya in the county of Troms, 350 kilometres (217 mi) inside the arctic circle. The island is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge.

The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in North Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. The city is a cultural centre for its region, several festivals taking place in the summer.
