Highlights of this cruise:
Iquitos
Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest. It is the capital of Loreto Region and Maynas Province. Located on the Amazon River, it has long been a major port in the Amazon Basin. It is surrounded by three rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya and the Amazon.
The Main Square is the city’s social and economic hub. It is very near the riverside called Tarapacá, its commercial center in the Próspero Street, and the traditional neighborhood of Belén with its floating houses on the river. Municipal Museum located in the Távara Street block 2, is a small and modest museum with handmade native artworks.
Iquitos is an ideal place for lovers of the eco-tourism. From the city you can go to jungle lodges, parks and natural reservations, full of exotic flora and fauna.
Manaus
Carved out of densest jungle, Manaus lies on the Negro River near its confluence with the Amazon. It is one of Brazil’s largest cities and the financial centre of north Brazil. It is also an important hub for ecotourism. This city’s history is based on the rubber harvests of years past, and today it thrives as a cruise port by offering numerous historical and ecological tourist attractions.
Rubber made Manaus the richest city in South America during the late 1800s and helped it earn its nickname, the “Paris of the Tropics”. Many wealthy European families settled in Manaus and brought their love of sophisticated European art, architecture, and culture with them.
Alter do Chao
Alter do Chão is a village 33km west from the Amazon port City of Santerem along one of the only roads in the state of Para, Brazil. Alter do Chão has for many years been a popular tourist destination for locals and with increasing numbers of tourists making trips along the Amazon River this village is becoming a well-known international destination.
Alter do Chao is set on a beautiful bay in the Rio Tapajós overlooked by two easily climbable hills, one the shape of a church altar, giving the place its name. Most of the year the bay is fringed by white sand beaches, which combine with the deep blue of the Tapajós to give it a Mediterranean look. In the dry season a sandbank in the middle of the bay is accessible either by wading or by canoe, and simple stalls provide the fried fish and chilled beer essential to the full enjoyment of the scene.
Belem
Belém (also called Para), is a city and port in northern Brazil, on the BaÃa do Guajará (Guajara Bay). It is part of the vast Amazon Delta, near the mouth of the Rio Guamá, about 80 miles (130 km) up the Rio Pará from the Atlantic.
Belém has a modern appearance with tree-lined streets, several plazas and public gardens, and many noteworthy buildings. The colonial portion retains the charm of tree-filled squares, churches and traditional blue tiles.
Attractions in Belem include the Cidade Velha (Old City), Forte do Castelo, the Ver-o-pêso market and the Estação das Docas Complex at the docks.
