10 Night cruise departing from Panama City to Callao onboard Crystal Endeavor.

Remote islands, pristine rainforests and protected reefs. UNESCO-listed jungles, archaeology sites and Ecuador’s “other Galapagos.” Explore eco-wonders from Panama to Peru in search of humpback whales, blue-footed boobies, spider monkeys and more.

Highlights of this cruise:

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA
THE WORLD’S CONNECTOR
Situated at the narrowest point in the Americas, the UNESCO-designated Casco Viejo has been revitalized with trendy new cafés, bars and shops. And yet, mere miles from the international fusion of Panama City’s colonial architecture and waterfront steel high-rises you’ll find one of the wildest rainforests in the Western Hemisphere, the Darien Jungle.

PEARL ISLANDS, PANAMA
SNORKELERS’ PARADISE
The Gulf of Panama is home to the spectacular Pearl Islands archipelago, around 250 small, pristine islands, the majority of which are uninhabited. These biologically diverse isles, rich in bird and marine life, are a paradise for those interested in scuba diving, whale watching and exploring the delicate flora and fauna of the islands’ wildlife preserves. Enjoy a relaxing day snorkeling in crystal clear waters off spectacular beaches or exploring remote jungle trails of the stunning interior.

DARIEN JUNGLE, PANAMA
FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD
The isolated Darién Jungle in eastern Panama stretches along the border with Colombia and encompasses the UNESCO-listed Darién National Park. The ecologically diverse landscape of the Darién Jungle is one of the world’s top spots for bird-watching, with such species as tanagers, manakins, macaws, toucans and eagles sharing the lush habitat with an array of wildlife, including spider monkeys and sloths. The region also hosts a number of indigenous tribes living in traditional villages.

ENSENADA DE UTRIA, COLOMBIA
PROTECTED REEFS & FOREST LAND
The dramatic mountain rainforests and marine environment of the Ensenada de Utria Natural National Park showcase some of Colombia’s most magnificent natural resources. With a warm, humid climate and some of the highest rainfall in the world, the region is a paradise for those wishing to explore rich coral reefs, waters inhabited by sea turtles, dolphins, whales and over 180 species of fish, and protected forestland that is home to spider monkeys, sloths, and a highly diverse bird population.

GORGONA ISLAND, COLOMBIA
A HOT SPOT FOR WHALES
Situated just off Colombia’s Pacific coast, Gorgona Island is a lush, tropical paradise that was once the site of a maximum-security prison. Today, the island is a national park and the prison ruins have been taken over by the island’s flora and fauna. The island’s unique ecosystem supports a diversity of wildlife, including the blue anole, the world’s bluest lizard. The island is popular with whale watchers from June through October, when humpback whales arrive for the breeding season.

ISLA DE LA PLATA, ECUADOR
ECUADOR’S OTHER GALÁPAGOS
Floating in the Pacific just off the coast of Ecuador is Isla de la Plata, a small, uninhabited island whose name translates to Island of Silver, possibly inspired by the legend of pirate Sir Francis Drake’s buried silver and gold treasure. Its rugged landscape of beaches, sheer clifftops and shrubland are part of the Machalilla National Park. Blue-footed boobies roam its two square miles, along with a host of other animal species that are found on the more famous Galápagos Islands.

LOBOS DE TIERRA, PERU
SEABIRD’S UTOPIA
Located about 12 miles off the Pacific Coast of Peru is Isla Lobos de Tierra, a rocky and virtually barren landscape that is among the protected guano islands, islets and capes along the Peruvian coast that are tentatively listed for UNESCO World Heritage Site inclusion. Once a major guano mining center, today it is known for the thousands of seabirds that flock to its windswept shores to breed. These include guanay cormorants, kelp gulls, Peruvian pelicans, and three species of boobies.

SALAVERRY, PERU
WHERE ANCIENT CITIES ABOUND
The port of Salaverry leads the way to Trujillo, Peru’s second largest city. The area is an archaeological treasure trove thanks to two pre-Inca civilizations: the Mochicas, who erected two pyramids, the Sun Temple and the Moon Temple; and the Chimu, whose adobe city of Chan Chan is now excavated. Later occupied by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, the colonial flavor of Trujillo is still very much evident in the architecture of its old churches and historic mansions.

ISLAS GUAÑAPE, PERU
WHERE FEATHERED FRIENDS GATHER
Off the Pacific Coast of La Libertad, Peru, lie the uninhabited islands of Guañape Norte, Guañape Sur, and a number of islets, comprising a group of islands known as Islas Guañape. Long exploited for their bounty of bird droppings, which can be used as an agricultural fertilizer, today the islands are protected by Peru’s National Reserve System of Guano Islands, Isles and Capes. The islands attract thousands of seabirds, including blue-footed boobies, Inca terns, and Peruvian pelicans.

LIMA/CALLAO, PERU
Lima is called the City of Kings, but a more appropriate nickname might be the City of Museums. Over 20 museums can keep you busy for hours, if not days. One museum displays pottery and textiles from Peru’s ancient civilizations; another exhibits 55,000 ceramic pieces; still another is a morbid yet fascinating Museum of the Inquisition. Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition for nearly three centuries, the building features not just the expected dungeons, but also a beautiful columned façade and carved mahogany ceiling. Lima’s streets are something of a museum in and of themselves. Mansions in the colonial district are adorned by ornate balconies. Churches are gorgeous and historic. The monastery at the church of San Francisco, for example, has a room of paintings by Pieter Paul Rubens and Van Dyck.
