15 Night Cruise sailing from Ushuaia roundtrip aboard Crystal Endeavor.

On an epic Antarctic holiday, observe the dramatic display presented by Mother Nature and her creatures, which include orcas, fin and humpback whales, and all three species of brushtail penguins – gentoo, Adélie and chinstrap. Prepare for extraordinary adventure with four days of discovery on the Antarctic Peninsula, and possible navigation close to Cape Horn on our final day at sea.

Visit Elephant Island, the historic site where Ernest Shackleton’s crew was marooned – and saved – in 1916; and the South Shetland Islands, where all wildlife is found in the approximately 3 percent of land not covered in ice, along the shores. Spend an indulgent Christmas holiday aboard your luxury expedition yacht, and ring in the New Year with grand explorations of the Antarctic Peninsula and its complex, snow-covered terrain.

Highlights of this cruise:

Ushuaia
Ushuaia lies on the triangular-shaped island of Tierra del Fuego. While Ferdinand Magellan was exploring the straits between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in 1520, he was amazed by the smoke and fires which seemed to appear at every turn. These fires, kept continuously alight by the Yaghan and Ona Indians, became the inspiration for the name “Tierra del Fuego,” Land of Fire.

West Point Island
Once known as Albatross Island due to the thousands of birds that nest here, this privately-owned island (in the Napier family since 1879) boasts spectacular scenery and impressive wildlife. The highest cliffs in the Falklands are here, and the rocky ledges near the “Devil’s Nose” promontory are where black-browed albatross and rockhopper penguins make their home. Magellanic penguins burrow in the harbor area, and whales, fur seals and occasional sea lions may be seen in surrounding waters.

Port Stanley
Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands – an archipelago long of importance to both scientists and seaman located some 350 miles east of Tierra del Fuego, 1,000 miles north of Antarctica and, as the locals claim, a mere 8,000 miles from Britain. Explore the Historic Dockyard Museum with galleries dedicated to maritime exploration, Antarctic heritage and the 1982 Falklands War. See the whalebone arch near Christ Church Cathedral, and look for magellanic penguins gathering at Gypsy Cove.

Antarctic Peninsula
Extending from the northern-most reaches of the Antarctic mainland, this 800-mile-long mountain range of ice and islands jutting into the Weddell Sea on approach to the Drake Passage, is the Antarctica of dreams. The most accessible part of the Great White Continent, here is where iconic tabular icebergs provide mesmerizing vistas, and where seals, seabirds, and chinstrap and Gentoo penguins make their home. Zodiac adventures and landings reveal the wonder of this pristine and captivating region.

Drake Passage
This 600-mile-wide body of water between South America’s Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula is where the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans converge, and where unimpeded westerly winds aid the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current – a huge volume of water about 600 times the flow of the Amazon River. Seabirds, notably wandering, royal and light mantled sooty albatross, as well as southern giant petrels, follow ships making the crossing and whales might also be seen.
