LIMA/CALLAO, PERU
Lima is called the City of Kings, but a more appropriate nickname might be the City of Museums. Over 20 museums can keep you busy for hours, if not days. One museum displays pottery and textiles from Peru’s ancient civilizations; another exhibits 55,000 ceramic pieces; still another is a morbid yet fascinating Museum of the Inquisition. Headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition for nearly three centuries, the building features not just the expected dungeons, but also a beautiful columned façade and carved mahogany ceiling. Lima’s streets are something of a museum in and of themselves. Mansions in the colonial district are adorned by ornate balconies. Churches are gorgeous and historic. The monastery at the church of San Francisco, for example, has a room of paintings by Pieter Paul Rubens and Van Dyck.
GENERAL SAN MARTÃN/PISCO, PERU
GATEWAY TO NAZCA GEOGLYPHS
The Peruvian port of General San MartÃn sits on the northeastern tip of the Paracas Peninsula in Punta Pejerrey. It is situated in the Paracas National Reserve, a coastal marine reserve set within a mostly desert landscape. The reserve is a sanctuary for numerous bird species, including the kelp gull and American oystercatcher. The nearby town of Pisco is known for its namesake brandy distilled from locally grown grapes. It is also a departure point for flights over the famous Nazca Lines.
ISLAS BALLESTAS, PERU
WILDLIFE MECCA
Set within the Pacific Ocean a short distance north of Peru’s Paracas Peninsula, the islands of Ballesta Norte, Ballesta Centro and Ballesta Sur, known collectively as the Islas Ballestas, are part of the Paracas National Reserve. The park includes the Paracas Peninsula, home of the ancient Candelabra geoglyph, set on a hill and visible from the ocean. The uninhabited Islas Ballestas are a haven for a variety of wildlife, including Humboldt penguins, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions.
MATARANI, PERU
PORTAL TO THE WHITE CITY
Situated on Peru’s southwestern Pacific Coast, the port town of Matarani is a gateway to Arequipa, also known as the White City owing to the white volcanic rock used in its buildings. Sitting 7,661 feet above sea level and surrounded by a dramatic landscape of volcanos, the city boasts a UNESCO-listed historical center highlighted by an impressive cathedral. Also near Matarani, nestled along the coast, is the MejÃa Lagoons National Sanctuary, which hosts hundreds of species of birds.
ARICA, CHILE
THE CITY OF ETERNAL SPRING
Nestled among coast, desert and a high Andean plateau, Arica enjoys a moderate climate worthy of its nickname, the City of Eternal Spring. Inhabited for the past 10,000 years, this lush city set within the Atacama Desert hosts such attractions as the 19th-century San Marco Cathedral, designed by renowned engineer Gustave Eiffel, and the Morro de Arica, a historic 450-foot hill offering stunning views of the harbor. About 100 miles northeast is Lauca National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
IQUIQUE, CHILE
Iquique might be described as an American Old-West town with a South American address. A history of mining and a pedestrian area with wooden sidewalks certainly evoke images of cowboys and gold mines. Throw in restored Georgian and Victorian architecture, duty-free shopping, wide swaths of beach and a sea with terrific surfing and paragliding, and you have not America’s frontier but one of Chile’s premiere beach resorts. Visitors take rooms at the high-rise hotels and bargain hunters pounce on deals on perfume and electronics, while others make a sure bet of a good time at the glitzy casino.
ANTOFAGASTA, CHILE
This beautiful, wealthy mining city captivates visitors with an outstanding climate and an eclectic culinary, music and art scene. View Mother Nature’s own spectacular handiwork, the rocky archway known as La Portada, just off shore, or peer at the stars from world-famous Paranal Observatory. View the massive Mano de Desierto (“Hand of the Desertâ€) sculpture, catch a football match at the Estadio Regional, or stroll the golden sands of Playa Paraiso for a spectacular Pacific sunset.
PAN DE AZUCAR, CHILE
A PENGUIN PARADISE
Stretching across the border of Chile’s Antofagasta and Atacama regions along the rugged Pacific Coast is Pan de Azúcar National Park, graced with more than 100,000 acres of beaches, cactus-spangled hills and stunning coastal views. Its avian centerpiece is Isla Pan de Azúcar, a small island located just offshore. Thousands of Humboldt penguins call its rocky shores home, along with an array of other wildlife, including Peruvian pelicans, turkey vultures, and South American marine otters.
ISLOTES PÃJAROS, CHILE
ISLETS OF THE BIRDS
The two tiny islets known as Islotes Pájaros Grande and Chico sit in the shimmering waters of the Pacific Ocean just off the Chilean coast of Caleta Hornos, a town in the commune of La Higuera. Their rugged shores host a wealth of seabirds, including Peruvian boobies, red-legged cormorants and Humboldt penguins. The islets also attract sea lions.

The seaside hills of the port of San Antonio offer spectacular views of the Pacific, merchant ships and pleasure boats, and fishmongers peddling their catch around the busy fish market. Blessed with a Mediterranean climate and emerging seafood-based food and wine industries, San Antonio is the ideal spot to enjoy a flavorful meal of local fish and Chardonnay, take a picturesque stroll along the port’s “Paseo Bellamar,†or enjoy a stunning outlook from the hilltop “Cristo del Maipo†statue.

The wild native forests and golden-sand beaches of heavenly Isla Mocha, Chile, a small island off the coast of Chile’s Arauco Province, are a paradise for hikers, divers and lovers of all things related to nature and the environment. Almost half of this idyllic island is devoted to the pristine Mocha Island National Reserve, while offshore recreational fishing and diving amongst several historic shipwrecks offer opportunities to explore waters once haunted by Dutch and English pirates.

At the head of the Pacific inlet known as Reloncavi Sound, Puerto Montt is the gateway to the Bavarian-flavored Chilean Lake District, a region graced with some of the world’s most inspiring scenery. Virgin forests, picturesque towns, snow-mantled mountains and translucent lakes adorn this idyllic setting. Visit a wonderland of scenic splendor, including the towering volcano of Mount Osorno, the tranquil Lake Llanquihue, the rushing rapids of Petrohue and the serenity of Lake Todos los Santos.
